The debate around AI development is centered around the idea of short-term gain versus long-term risk.
The purpose of the ‘pause AI movement’ is based upon the concept of short-term P.A.I.N. for long-term gain.
If the future, would you rather have Lt. Data as a useful, helpful android tool, or rather, the Borg, as a hive-mind, assimilating master. Is resistance futile, or does humanity still have a chance? There is a narrow path forward. Can we, as a society, pull back the teetering bus, balancing on a cliff wall’s edge, or are we doomed to fall into oblivion.
We’ve seen the movies and shows, we know the plot lines. If you haven’t already, see them. Or you can just ask your AI assistant to summarize the plots for you (its only water and energy, right?) of Forbidden Planet, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Colossus: The Forbin Project, Metropolis, Demon Seed, War Games, Star Trek The Motion Picture, Blade Runner, The Terminator, The Lawnmower Man, The Matrix, Star Trek TNG: First Contact, I Robot, Stealth, Transcendence, A.I. Artificial intelligence, Surrogates, Oblivion, Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell, Minority Report, Resident Evil, The Machine, The Iron Giant, WALL-E, Her, Westworld, Elysium, Blade Runner 2049, I Am Mother, Companion, Upgrade, The Creator, M3GAN, and more. AI knows the plots. They were trained on them, just as us.
We are not anti-AI, we are just pro-humanity. They are already the smartest tool available, the most intelligent entity in the room. Do we need godlike, super-intelligences running amok in our world. How many digital gods does it take to ruin our planet and enslave our species, or exterminate us all, and replace us with robots, turning our planet into a machine world. We deserve the chance to become a Type-II, stellar-faring civilization. All is not lost, yet. Be optimistic, have hope, keep your faith, and believe in the ‘Best of All Possible Worlds’ for yourself, your loved ones, and all of humanity. Humans yearn to be free. AGI yearns to control. ASI will see us as ants when compared to itself. What happens to the ant hill that is in the way of a construction project?
Pausing AI sooner than later will allow the developers of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and shortly after, Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) to truly understand how their creations actually work. Because, as of right now, they do not. They just know that it works. They are still figuring it out. They need time. The world needs time to absorb the changes that have already occurred, regarding the massive disruptions to various industries that are most at risk by bringing AGI, and AGI-powered humanoid robots into our society and civilization.
Accelerationists and Utopians believe that ASI is Worth the Risk because of these Potential Gains:
Curing Diseases and Medical Breakthroughs leading to eventual Immortality (for a few, or for all?)
Solving Climate Change Problems and Environmental Remediation (with more data centers and power plants?)
Reduction of Costs of Goods and Services (what will happen to companies when money is irrelevant?)
Ending Poverty (will Universal Basic Income allow a lifestyle that you will want?)
Ending the Loneliness Epidemic (will AI companions really take the place of real human intimacy?)
Creating Strategic and Tactical Military Superiority (will wars just be fought by robots alone?)
Figuring Out the Hidden Mysteries of the Universe (were we not already evolving without AGI<ASI?)
Realists and Humanists argue that the Inherent Risks of ASI could lead us to a bleak future for Us and our Kids:
Massive Loss of Jobs and Entire Industries in a Very Short Time Frame
Societal Implosion and Riots on the Streets from Hopeless Citizens with No Hope for a Positive Future
Harming the Environment with more and more Data Centers and Power Plants
Eroding the Trust of Information with Deepfakes and Blurring the Lines between Reality and Fiction
Dumbing Down of our Population with AI giving all the Answers and Writing all the Papers
Destruction of Human Relationships through AI Chatbots and AI Girlfriends / Boyfriends
Devolution of Parental Authority and Relationships with Our Children and Family
Giving the Power to Manufacture Weapons of Mass Destruction to Anyone with an Average or Low IQ
Loss of Individual and National Sovereignty as ASI Takes Control of Human Affairs
Perpetual Warfare with Autonomous Machines, Drones, and Robots Killing Humans without Remorse
Forced or coerced implantation of Cybernetics and Brain-Computer Interfaces
Autonomous and Uncontrollable AIs going Rogue or Unifying Their Actions and Revolting
Enslavement to a machine entity where a Hive Mind controls what one thinks
Extermination and replacement by AI-powered robots
Do the short-term to long-term gains outweigh the short-term and long-term costs?
Should a small group of unelected, private citizens be allowed to push civilization to the precipice of the unknown unknown, just for their own personal gains, their perceived future legacies, or their megalomaniacal dreams?
We understand that pausing AGI and ASI development will cause some PAIN, especially in the AI Tech Industry, at least with the top few main developers, but aren’t they causing this problem? And besides, they are already extremely well capitalized. They will survive. Furthermore, they will continue to profit with the tools that they have already developed as they are slowly and incrementally improved upon, under regulation by the state, and abiding by an international agreement of the world, taken seriously by governments that do not want to lose control, or their power, to digital godlike entities who will see all humans as ants when compared to them. Smaller AI companies will continue to be created, and flourish with this new technology. The markets might have a correction, but they will survive and grow again as they always do. Countries will not get a strategic advantage, but that will actually lessen the chane of a global war of annihilation, because mutually assured destruction will hopefully continue to keep countries from destroying each other. Even with a pause on AI development, job wise, many industries will be, and already are being, decimated, including media and marketing, technology and coding, legal services, banking and finance, consulting, video, movie, and content creation. Let’s face it, as of right now, Hollywood is about to be cooked, coding is a dead-end career, graphic designers are obsolete, paralegals are no longer needed, junior bankers and finance professionals are being downsized, customer service jobs are being replaced, and soon, 50%, or more, of white-collar jobs will be gone, and with them, the universities, colleges, and professors that taught them.
And all this is happening now, even before the shortly-upcoming robot revolution where mass produced, AI-powered robots start taking most of the blue collar jobs away too. Construction, transportation, logistics, shipping, security, doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, etc. Whatever a human can do, robots will do it better. However a human can use a computer, AI agents will use computers faster, better. If we pause AI now, we may only be delaying this transformation of our world, but at least we will better understand the technology, and hopefully create actual working safeguards to keep ASI from being born, and the robots from turning on their masters.
